I've just unzipped and run the Snippet Editor (using 'Run as Administrator') and it's not finding the VS2008 snippets. The only item in the dropdown is 'SnippetEditor.Utility.Product'. Have I done something wrong, or have I not done something necessary?

If a new snippet is created by clicking "New" button on the toolbar, saving it causes some pain because user gets asked where to save it and it's not possible to point to the snippet tree.
I think it's better to concentrate all snippet-management functionality around snippet tree and remove button "New" from the toolbar.

Closed Issue: Too slow with many replacements [13630]

Actually I am using this tool to create classes and stored procedures for my n-tier applications. I have a snippet with 82 replacements and the program is so slow that a simple modification takes seconds and seconds to complete. I tested it on several computers but had the same behavior. Please fix this. Anyway thanks for the great tool ;)

This is probably due to the way snippet replacement highlighting is implemented. From memory I think it scans the code once per replacement variable.
Is your 82 replacements 82 different variables ? Usually snippets only have about a handful of replacement variables, although each variable may be used multiple times.
Can you send/attach a sample snippet ?

Closed Issue: System.Xml.XmlException: Root element is missing. [14293]

This just started occuring. When I open VB Snippet Editor either independently or from within VS 2008, the snippet folders no longer load. When I click on the Search dropdown, this error is thrown: System.Xml.XmlException: Root element is missing.

Help! Any ideas? The details of the error follow.

Problem is likely your registry entries aren't found for your product version. Download the source code and put a break in the LoadLanguagesFromRegistry method to see what languages are found (if any)

I am unable to reproduce the error. Please downlaod the latest build and run from Visual Studio. Looking at the method it's likely either the file isn't found or the file itself is malformed.

First, when I startup SnippetEditor, the combo box in the upper left where you select the type of code snippet (VB, C#, etc..) it has "SnippetEditor.Utility.Product" as all the text for the drop-down and when I attempt to make a selection, I get an unhandled exception error that I've attached. I attempted to reinstall SnippetEditor, but it contiues even after that.

Interesting suggestion. Problem is snippets are file based, and as such can have conflicting names if paths are nto preserved.
I recommend making a folder in your user documents path and using that for your snippets you edit. This solves various problems with admin rights and also allows you to easily copy that folder to another machine etc.
Perhaps adding a tip to the snippet editor abotu organising and managing snippets might be in order.

Thanks. This looks like a problem with the way the registry is parsed. At first glance it seems using HKCU instead of HKLM will fix the problem, but need to regression test with other versions of Visual Studio.
What I'll probably do is release a new version with VS 2012, that only supports 2010 and 2012.

Closed Issue: Snippets from users Documents folder don't show up [15139]

I always store my snippets in my Documents folder (Documents/Visual Studio 2008 (or 2010)/Snippets) as it makes it easier to port my custom snippets between machines.

It'd be useful if I could also get those snippets loaded into the Snippet Editor.

It would also get around the problem of having to run the Snippet Editor as an administrator in Win Vista/ Win7 due to UAC locking down the Program Files folder.

And yes, I too store my favourite snippets in my documents path. You should be able to browse to that path fro mthe snippet editor to add.

Closed Issue: Snippet Editor Error [21738]

I installed the latest version of Snippet Editor yesterday and found that it still won't run on my machine (Win 7 & VS 2008 - vb). I get the message "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application..." when starting.

I looked for fixes to remedy the problem and found only one about the config file entries which did not work. I can't believe that I am the only one who has the problem and that has existed for over two years and no one has a solution. Even after I bought Bill McC a beer - no good deed goes unpunished.

Add "Duplicate" item in context menu for existing snippet.

Run the application from visual studio and give us more details on the error. It's most likely a registry problem, but can't tell form the detail provided.
